It had been a long day for Allyana and her mother. They had spent the day travelling from North Carolina to New York. Allyana had wanted to fly, it would have meant landing in New York fresh, ready to take in her surroundings. However, Mama Rivera had her heart set on driving – that being that Allyana would drive while her mother sat in the back seat with her feet up – and Allyana didn’t want to disappoint her. Had she realised what a ten hour car journey with Mama Rivera in the back would have involved, she would probably have decided that was the moment to stand up for what she wanted for the first time.
So ten hours later they found themselves in the luxury hotel room of The Benjamin. Allyana’s father always insisted they have the best despite her protests. Allyana was quietly putting away her clothes in the closet when there was a sudden shout.
“Mija!” Exclaimed Mama Rivera.”Come quick!”
Allyana rushed out of the room to her mother to see her sitting in front of her laptop.
Allyana just looked at her concerned. “What’s going on? What wrong?”
“I don’t know! I just click the button and now the girl angry with me?!” Said Mama Rivera clearly confused.
Allyana squinted her eyes and looked down at the computer before shaking her head. Her mother had posted on Lora Shaw's timeline, which had obviously been a mistake. “Why are you even online, mama? You know you can’t work it properly?”
“I paying for it! I making sure I use it!” She proclaimed.
Allyana just rolled her eyes. “It’s free Wi-Fi, you don’t pay.”
Mama Rivera shook her head at her daughter as well as her finger. “Nothing is free in this life, mija. I no care what they say, I taking my monies worth.”
Allyana sighed but she knew there was no point in pushing the point. “Well that’s great, but now you’ve gone and fired up one of my colleagues.”
“I didn’t mean to, it was meant for you!” Mama Rivera said forcefully.
“What do you mean?” Said Allyana, puzzled.
“You not wearing clothes in your picture! You must respect yourself and not be like hussy.” Said Mama, clearly not impressed by the pictures on her daughter’s timeline.
“Mama!” Said Allyana, offended by her mother’s comments. “It was a shoot from when I was in Force 1, and you’re making out like I’m wearing nothing, that’s not true.”
“I can see leg, thigh leg!” Said her mother. “What would your papi say?”
Allyana pulled up the seat next to her mother. “Enough, we’re not getting into this now. We have bigger problems. I want these people to like me, mama! It’s probably best if you stay away from this.”
Allyana tapped quickly on the keyboard, excusing her mother and trying to salvage any chance of friendship she may have had with the woman.
“Hopefully that fixes things.” Said Allyana with a nervous smile.
“Don’t worry, mija. One stranger’s opinion do not matter, if they no like you then they be many who will.” Said Mama Rivera as she tried to reassure her daughter.
Allyana looked at her with a worried look on her face. “It’s not as simple as that, mama. Please just stay off the Wi-Fi for now, okay?”
Mama Rivera looked outraged. “No, I want to be a part of it, I want to learn!”
Allyana looked at her mother, who’s desperate need to feel included, as far as she was concerned, trumped her own need to be liked. “Okay, but please be more careful. I can’t keep jumping in to help.”
“It’s okay, I check next time. And then check again.” Said Allyana’s mother, pleased with herself.
Allyana nodded and turned her back on her mother to go back to organising her clothes. Just before she could leave the room her mother called on her.
“Mija? It say’s I’m being followed by two men?! Should I call police?!” Asked Mama Rivera, still not understanding the concept of social media.
Allyana just closed her eyes for a second and chuckled to herself before she turned back and took a seat next to her mother once again. If Mama Rivera was to be online, she was going to need some help.
