KAIDEN HAWKE ♦ DEADLY SERIOUS
I don't even need a heart to send Harrison on his way.
I don't even need a heart to send Harrison on his way.
His words were muffled, talking to a punching bag while he gave it everything he had with his large clenched fists dressed in black tape. This wasn't just your ordinary training, this was a true workout; a nonstop testament to exactly what this sport meant to that rookie, what this upcoming match sought to gain him should he win.
♦ QUESTION MARK ♦
You sure 'bout that, Kaiden?
You sure 'bout that, Kaiden?
The man of the hour scoffed, shaking his head back and forth. His fists lowered reluctantly to his side, eyeing a familiar face with a hint of disgust.
KAIDEN HAWKE ♦ DEADLY SERIOUS
Grayson, what the hell are you doing here? Aren''t you supposed
to be in Philly?

GRAYSON DAVIS ♦ WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE
Well... That's hardly a way to welcome your best friend, huh?
'Sides, I've been moving up in the world since we last talked
a few months back. New York? It's my stomping grounds now,
and this right here? Well, I'll just give you permission
to keep using my gym. What's fair is fair, am I right?
What would you know about fair? And what, because
you happen to train here, you think that just automatically
gives you the right to choose who does and who doesn't
train here? Seriously?

Grayson had a certain arrogance about his gestures that couldn't be easily duplicated. His eyebrows furrowed, his eyes themselves piercing and blue. Atop Davis' head, thick blond hair like a porcupine, cleanly combed back yet sharp at the top.

Puh-lease. I'm plenty fair. Which reminds me.
What makes you think you can actually come close to
beating a guy like Mike Harrison anyway, huh? I mean,
you're a damn rookie and he has 12 years on you.
He's been in main events, he's held world championships,
and what's the highest achievement you have?
Some collegiate wins back in school? A few lucky pins in
amateur wrestling?

He scoffed, his words making him cringe, cutting like a knife at his jugular.

It's not that simple, Grayson.
It's not that simple, Grayson.

Not that simple? Isn't it? You can't hide behind Alice
like a pussy anymore. You can't cower in fear and hope
you have what it takes to win this. You can't just
pray your way into the Pure Championship Tourney
like some kind of pathetic kid. And you can't just—

The 'Mercenary Man' backed away from the punching bag without a word, crossing his arms and to the side, his back against the white brick wall.
KAIDEN HAWKE ♦ DEADLY SERIOUS
Yes, I can. He's reached his peak, and clearly,
he's grown complacent if he's happy about getting
the opening match twice in a goddamn row.
I know I'm not happy about it, that's for sure.
It pisses me off. It really does.
13 years in the ring, and you'd think he'd be more
focused. You'd think he'd be able to take the pressure.
You'd think he'd know the in-ring psychology like
the back of his fucking hand, but he doesn't know shit!
Technique can only get you so far. Speed and agility do little
to impress me. If a man like him doesn't have focus, if a
man who's held 'world championships' doesn't know how
to play with his opponent's mind like I do, doesn't know
how to stay calm when the eyes are on him,
he doesn't deserve to be Pure Champion. He doesn't
deserve to be in this goddamn company!
The early bird catches the worm.
The early bird, who's studied this business from
head to toe, from top to bottom gets the success
handed to him. He gets the worm. And men like
Harrison? Women like Liz Smalls who just whine
and complain to the top only to fall flat
where it matters?
They have no place in this sport, no place calling themselves
future champions here in Metro, and I'll be damned
if someone like that rises to the creme of the crop
just based on star power, just based on how much
they've complained, 'cause if you can't back it up in the ring,
if you can't stay calm, if you can't focus on the prize in front
of your eyes, get the hell out of the championship hunt and go
back to fighting meaningless matches against the Aura Williams'
of the world or the Morgan Le Faye's 'cause that's
all you'll ever be good for.
The early bird catches the worm.
And once Harrison is disposed with, I'm kissing mediocrity goodbye.
